As soon as you know your move date, arrange for your insurance, telephone, internet, cable, and electric service to be transferred. Cancel the cable at least a day before the move; you definitely won't be watching TV the night before!
Make sure to overlap your electric service if it's a local move; you will most likely be shuttling back and forth between the two residences for a few days to clean the old place; you'll need electricity for that.
Schedule your new cable, internet, and phone hookup for a few days after your move. You'll want to make sure that you know where the furniture will be placed and everything is settled before installation.
When packing to move, it's best to start with all non-essential items, such as pictures, books, CDs, DVDs, and knick-knacks. The last things to go should be bed linens, the shower curtain, toiletries, and window coverings (no need to let thieves see that you're getting ready to move).
Leave the clothes in your dresser drawers, especially if you are using professional movers - you would be amazed at how strong they are! If necessary, you can take the drawers out and carry those separately; there is no need to box up your clothes.
